Birding

Explore the rich diversity of the feathered kingdom on the Lower Zambezi

Tafika Zambezi offers opportunities for spectacular birding with over 300 species being recorded.

Waterbirds will probably be your main interest, and the river in these areas have plentiful islands with reedbeds, smaller narrow channels providing habitats for many interesting birds, and open sandbars and beaches when the river level is lower. Sandbars create great habitats for waders but these areas, used by African Skimmers, White-fronted Plovers ,and flocks of Red Winged Pratincoles can be flooded by water released from Kariba. Herons and egrets live on the banks, but the thick foliage of overhanging trees are preferred by Black-crowned and White-backed Night-herons.

One of the most delightful of avian spectacles is provided by the Carmine Bee Eaters, which begin to arrive in their thousands as of mid August in a jewel bright celebration of crimson and blue to breed in tunnels on and above the riverbank

Bring your binoculars and bird book (or pick up one of our bird spotting check lists in camp) and see how many you can spot during your stay!
